Earth's Core Blobs: Chemical Interaction May Shed Light On Composition Of Other Planets (Huffington post)

By: Charles Q. Choi, OurAmazingPlanet Contributor

Metallic blobs that rise from Earth's core might help explain the mysterious
innards of other planets, new research suggests.

Under the outer crust of the Earth sits the rocky mantle layer and then the
planet's metallic, iron-dominated core. Scientists can probe these layers
indirectly by measuring how the speed of seismic waves and electrical signals
change as they zip through them. Analysis of the lowermost mantle in past
studies revealed areas of high electrical conductivity (meaning that electric
signals travel very easily) and low seismic velocity, suggesting that iron
from the outer core was penetrating the mantle.

However, it remained a mystery as to how iron from the core might extensively
chemically interact with the mantle. Known processes for how metal from the
core might infiltrate rock in the mantle were either too slow or too small in
scale to explain the results that researchers saw.

Now a phenomenon discovered by accident and described in the new study in the
Dec. 13 issue of the journal Nature reveals that blobs of iron-rich liquid
from the outermost core might have, over the history of the ...

Potatoman Seeks the Troof in the fields of a live-action farming trailer (Joystiq)

_Potatoman Seeks the Troof_ isn't a live-action agriculture roleplaying game
as its trailer would lead us to believe (unfortunately), but it does look
intriguing in its own right (fortunately). _Potatoman _comes from indie
developer Pixeljam, and it's available for PC and Mac now, solo for $3, or in
a variety of fresh Pixeljam bundles, spanning the Trilogy, Octology and
Holiday Bonus.

The Trilogy costs $5 and includes _Potatoman_, _Planeteri _and the _Bitku
b_eta. The Octology doesn't include any squid-like sea creatures, but it does
have all three games in the Trilogy, along with _Snowball_, _Marathon of
Doom_, the _Potatoman _soundtrack, _Pixeljams Volume 1_ album and _Dino Run
SE_. For $15, grab the Holiday Bonus, which includes all of the above goodies,
along with the _Dino Run_ text adventure and _Beezlebuds _alpha.

The above cinematic trailer for _Potatoman Seeks the Troof_, however, is
completely free.

ITU's Sticky WCIT: Do New Rules Cover Just Big Telcos... Or Absolutely Everyone? (Techdirt)

As the ITU's World Conference on Telecommunications (WCIT) continues in Dubai,
a rather important "debate" has slowed any progress to a crawl. The key thing
that is being worked on, of course, is new International Telecommunications
Regulations (ITRs). Most of the debates we've talked about to date have been
about what kind of mandate the ITU might have on things outside its direct
areas of interest, as indications were that they wanted to expand the ITRs to
cover things like the internet, online security and more. But a key fight
shows how it goes beyond even just that. The big debate at WCIT right now is
over a simple definition that could have massive implications: will the ITRs
apply to "recognized operating agencies" or just "operating agencies." Seems
simple, right? Not really.

Currently, the ITRs apply to "recognized operating agencies" which tend to be
the huge telcos, often either state owned, or formerly state owned (and often
still closely aligned with the government). Basically, the big national telcos
that everyone is aware of. Those are considered "recognized operating
agencies." But, if they take out the word "recognized" then it would cover:
"any individual, company, corporation or ...

Leaked drawings of the C7 Corvette hit the web (Autoblog)

Hope Santa's got some coal left, because someone else has earned it for yet
another holiday season leak. Alongside leaked shots for the 2013 Bentley
Continental GT Speed Convertible and Mercedes-Benz CLA, a Corvette Forum
member recently uploaded a number of drawings of the C7 Corvette that he says
someone has been sending him. The post has since been removed from the forum,
the original poster, "Blue Ox," writing "the information I posted is less
'public' than was originally thought and... someone's job could be in danger."

There are no take-backs on the Internet, though. The drawings look to be from
an owner's manual or a service guide and show the coupe's exterior, rear end
and inside the rear hatch, then cover details of the cockpit, seats and engine
bay. There's a new steering wheel inside, and a large central screen with a
new array of HVAC buttons underneath. Pilots will get to sit in new sports
seats that finally appear to have the proper amount of bolstering for a
Corvette.

The dash cluster that was teased in a video not long ago looks like ...

VIBE Q: The Game - God Blessed A Gangsta (Vibe)

### Things just ain’t the same for the aggressive content brigade. But Game’s
impact on West Coast hip-hop is solid. Once the new kid on the Left Coast
block, the Compton native is now an elder statesman from which upstarts like
Kendrick Lamar can learn. With arguably his best material cued up, the

**When Jayceon Taylor was** ambushed in his Compton, Calif., stash house, back
in 2001, and punctured by five bullets from a .45 Glock, the soon-to-be
rapper’s life literally flashed before his eyes. Eleven years later, after
selling more than 7 million records and reviving a dormant L.A. rap scene as
the Game, the MC once again feels his existence is in danger. Amidst the hell-
raising fury of October’s Hurricane Sandy, his plane suffered a precarious
descent into Atlanta. “No exaggeration, we almost died on the landing, bro,”
recalls the 33-year-old spitter, once known as Hurricane Game, of today’s
flight touchdown. “When the wheels touched the ground the plane jumped back
into the air because it was unstable. It’s scary out here, no exaggeration.”

Game is, ...
