10 Gadgets of 2012) Business: Electrolux Goes Home (Dec. 18, 1933): One thing
that caught the attention of Alfred Pritchard Sloan Jr. at the Refrigeration
Show in Manhattan in 1926 was an automatic ice box which had no moving parts,
made no noise and worked by means of a little gas flame and a solution of
ammonia and water. Solemn Mr. Sloan had a long talk with the tall, red-cheeked
man who was standing beside this new refrigerator. Mr. Sloan liked the
refrigerator but not its price. Six years later Mr. Sloan's Frigidaire Corp.
was also making a refrigerator which chilled when heat was applied. Science:
For Rainy Days (Dec. 18, 1950): One way to make a raincoat is to use a solid
sheet of rubber or plastic that water cannot penetrate. Another and newer way
is to cover the fibers of ordinary cloth with a substance that water does not
"wet." Many substances have ...

Double Crossover

Toyota tried to make family hauler commercials cool with its "Swagger Wagon"
spot for the Sienna minivan back in 2010, but now Fiat looks to have created
the unrated version of Toyota's idea with a web ad for its new Fiat 500L
called "The Motherhood." Trying to cater to the 500L's target demographic, no
punches are pulled as this blonde British mom attempts to describe all the
joys of family raising.
We're not going to spoil anything for you here, but if you're hoping for
useful information about the larger 500L, then this commercial isn't for you.
If you're looking for an entertaining way to kill a few minutes, then check
the (now viral) video out by scrolling below. With more double entendres than
you'll know what do with, though, we have to warn you that this video's
language _might_ be a little unsafe for conservative workplaces.

Farm Tractor
Power in Action 2009 - Tractors and farm machines at work
Welcome to The Farm
In a town in Denmark's remote Jutland peninsula is a farm unlike any you've
seen before. There's no cattle, no crops and not so much as a tractor in
sight. In fact, it's an industrial zone made up of 12 factories, the
headquarters of which is probably the most gloriously designed set of offices
one could lay one's eyes upon. Constructed of simple, authentic materials -
black Icelandic basalt rock, Scandinavian hardwoods, glass and concrete - made
up of three buildings connected at right angles and looking almost exactly
like one of its products from the 70s, it's hard to mistake this for anything
other than the nerve centre of Bang & Olufsen. Welcome to The Farm.
A small flock of sheep in the neighbouring field and views out onto rows and
rows of windmill turbines across the plains of this extraordinarily flat and
gusty part of the world are the only other hints to any kind of agriculture.
"The sheep belong to a farmer nearby," explains B&O's product communicator,
Iza, in flawless English as she leads us through into the building. "We
actually pay a bit for them to graze ...
