Repaying our debts (Dawn-All-News)

AT a recording last year for a PTV programme on the state of the economy, Gen
Hamid Gul, a fellow co- panellist, argued for the repudiation of Pakistan’s
external debt, as these were “odious” loans. In response to

Last car removed from derailed N.J. train (Arlington Heights Daily Herald)

Workers have removed the final tanker car that was part of a freight train
that derailed more than two weeks ago in southern New Jersey. Recovery efforts
are now focused on repairing a swivel-style bridge over Mantua Creek in
Paulsboro where the accident occurred.

Electromagnetic Test Town (bldgblog.blogspot)

I was fascinated to read yesterday that a cyberwarfare training city is under
construction, to be opened by March 2013, "a small-scale city located close by
the New Jersey Turnpike complete with a bank, hospital, water tower, train
system, electric power grid, and a coffee shop."

I envisioned whole empty streets and bank towers—suburban houses and replica
transportation depots—sitting there in the rain whilst troops of code-wielding
warriors hurl electromagnetic spells from laptops against elevator circuit
boards, sump pumps, and garage doors, flooding basements, popping open
underground gold vaults, and frying traffic lights, like some gonzo version of
_The Italian Job_ wed with the digital wizardry of a new sorcerer class, the
"first-line cyber defenders" who will be trained in this place, our 21st-
century Hogwarts along the freeway. Then they clean it all and start again
tomorrow.

Alas. Although this, in many ways, is even more interesting, the entire "test
city" truly is miniature: indeed, the whole thing "fits in a ...

MIT researchers discover a new kind of magnetism (MIT)

Following up on earlier theoretical predictions, MIT researchers have now
demonstrated experimentally the existence of a fundamentally new kind of
magnetic behavior, adding to the two previously known states of magnetism.

Ferromagnetism — the simple magnetism of a bar magnet or compass needle — has
been known for centuries. In a second type of magnetism, antiferromagnetism,
the magnetic fields of the ions within a metal or alloy cancel each other out.
In both cases, the materials become magnetic only when cooled below a certain
critical temperature. The prediction and discovery of antiferromagnetism — the
basis for the read heads in today’s computer hard disks — won Nobel Prizes in
physics for Louis Neel in 1970 and for MIT professor emeritus Clifford Shull
in 1994.

“We’re showing that there is a third fundamental state for magnetism,” says
MIT professor of physics Young Lee. The experimental work showing the
existence of this new state, called a quantum spin liquid (QSL), is reported
this week in the journal _Nature_, with Lee as the senior author and Tianheng
Han, who earned his PhD in physics at MIT earlier this year, as lead author.

The QSL is a solid crystal, but ...

Arming Teachers Is Not An Answer (crooksandliars)

Click here to view this media

The NRA lunatics seem to have settled on their counterpoint theme to the
outcry for some kind of gun control. In their twisted little minds, we should
simply arm the teachers, and make sure everyone has access to a gun.

Yep, that's the answer. MORE guns. Guns for everybody! Too many guns to count,
just arm them all and let's see who's the last one standing.

It's unspeakably stupid, and it's the last thing our schools need right now.
Will we also require teachers to wear bulletproof vests while they're teaching
their classes in case there's a shootout between the teacher in the classroom
next door and some insane crazed lunatic with a weapon that should never have
been invented, much less used by a civilian?

Last summer, I spent time in Detroit at the American Federation of Teachers
convention. As I walked around the convention center I picked up snippets of
conversations here and there. More than once, teachers expressed concern that
they could not keep the children safe if their class sizes were too big. You
may recall that Mitt Romney, Michelle Rhee, and other "reformers" are ...
