AF5U Flying Pancake 1/27 Scale Model Aircraft $140.95 The brainchild of Charles H. Zimmerman, the F5U was intended to perform well as a fighter plane while being able to remain in flight at extremely low airspeed, making it easier to operate from carriers. The F5Us unusual appearance owed to a very low aspect ratio wing without a fuselage, which resulted in something looking like a flying saucer. This shape, combined with powerful engines driving large propellers, could plow through the air at low speed (40 mph!), since the whole airframe is immersed in the prop wash. The AF5U Flying Pancake was manufactured by Vought. It was a fighter aircraft and the brainchild of Charles Zimmerman during World War II. Its maiden flight was on the 23rd of November 1942 and its production was cancelled on the 17th of March 1947. The AF5U was the most unusual aircraft designed for the U.S. Navy. It consists of a flat, somewhat disk-shaped body with a very low aspect ratio wing without fuselage that looks like a flying saucer. The AF5U has two 1,600 hp Pratt and Whitney R-2000 radial engines. Its configuration was designed to have a low aspect ratio aircraft that will have a low takeoff and landing speed and high top speed. It can accommodate only one, the pilot; it has a length of 28 ft. 7 in.; wingspan of 32 ft. 6 in.; height of 14 ft. 9 in.; empty weight of 13,107 lbs., loaded weight of 16,722 lbs. and max takeoff weight of 18,772 lbs. It has a maximum speed of 425 mph; range of 1,064 miles; rate of climb 718 ft. per minute; and service ceiling of 34,492 ft. It has 6 x .50 machine guns or 4 x 20 mm machine guns or 2 x 1000 lb. bombs. Charles Lindbergh had successfully flown the first flight of the prototype, the V-173 and he was surprised that it was easy to handle. The aircrafts main problem was its gearbox which produces unacceptable amounts of vibration. 3D HMCS Cape Breton – Nanainmo, BC Canada Waterproof Dive Site Card $9.95 HMCS Cape Breton was launched in 1944 at the Burrard Dry-dock facility in North Vancouver, British Columbia as the HMS Flamborough Head. Flamborough Head was one of a series of ships intended to operate with the British Pacific Fleet in the war against Japan and for the re-colonization of Asian territories. While they were under construction, the Royal Navy was experiencing a severe manpower shortage. To this end, Sir Winston Churchill attempted to get Canadian Prime Minister Mackenzie King to provide Canadian crews. Thisoffer was refused by the wartime Canadian leader for political reasons. Ultimately the war ended before the whole class was completed and several completed as merchant ships. HMS Flamborough Head commissioned into service of the Royal Navy in North Vancouver in 1945. It sailed from Vancouver and remained in active service with that service until 1952 when purchased by the Royal Canadian Navy. The ship commissioned as HMCS Cape Breton at Halifax on January 31, 1953. Ships of Canada’s Naval Forces 1910-1981 by Macpherson and Burgess stated, She served at Halifax until August 25, 1958 as a repair ship and training establishment for technical apprentices. Converted to escort maintenance ship at Esquimalt, she was commissioned there on November 16, 1959 for service on the West Coast. On February 10, 1964, Cape Breton was paid off into reserve, but since 1972 she has functioned as a towed mobile support facility and accommodation vessel at Esquimalt. On October 20, 2001 at 12:40 pm, The Honorable Judith Reid, MLA, The Honorable Mike Hunter, MLA, His Worship Mayor Gary Korpan and John Ruttan, Chairman of the Nanaimo Port Authority, simultaneously pushed the two detonation buttons and the Cape Breton cutting charges were exploded. Moments later a fantastic pyrotechnics show was enjoyed by several thousand boaters and ferry patrons. The popularity of the Saskatchewan is apparent when youconsider that well over 100,000 dives have been completed since she was sunk on June 14, 1997: more than all other B.C. artificial reefs put together! Hundreds of boats, including a ferry that B.C. Ferries and its crew donated as a viewing platform, gathered just off the western side of Snake Island, a bird sanctuary and home to over 250 harbor seals, to watch the sinking. In just over 2 minutes the 366 foot Saskatchewan slipped below the surface and began its descent to the sandy bottom where it came to rest in 130 feet of water with a 6 degree list to the portside. The bow faces to the south and the stern to the north. The top of the mast is at45 feet and the bulk of the vessel is between 80 and 100 feet. This unique card provides detailed depiction of the HMCS SaskatchewanWreck. Each waterproof card is printed on both sides, made of durable PVC plastic and is designed to be taken on the dive.
