Seven faculty members at The University of Texas at Austin have been elected
fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).
AAAS fellows are chosen annually by their peers to recognize their

Jordan Davis Shooting Result Of Florida's Gun Laws, Opponents Say (Huffington post)
On Saturday, Lucia McBath and Ron Davis buried their 17-year-old son, Jordan
Davis.
That Davis was killed after an exchange about loud music is not in dispute.
Neither is the fact that Michael David Dunn, 45, fired eight to nine shots
into the red SUV where Davis and three friends were sitting outside a
Jacksonville, Fla., gas station, striking Davis twice.
Dunn has been charged with murder and attempted murder in connection with the
Nov. 23 incident, entered a plea of not guilty and remains in a Florida jail.
But in claiming that he fired after seeing, in the words of his lawyer, “four
black men” and a shotgun that police never found emerging from one of the
vehicle’s rear windows, Dunn has raised the specter of a defense centered
around Florida’s now-infamous Stand Your Ground law. The policy offers
criminal and civil legal protections to individuals who use deadly force to
defend themselves if and when they feel threatened. It's at the heart of
volunteer neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman’s explanation for his
decision to shoot another black 17-year-old boy, Trayvon Martin, in February.

SEATTLE, Dec 5 (Reuters) - With Washington state poised to become the first in
the nation legalizing marijuana possession for adult recreational use,
Seattle's city attorney issued a stern warning on Wednesday to those waiting
to celebrate - no pot puffing in public.
The West Coast state's liberal marijuana law, passed by voters last month,
takes effect on Thursday, removing criminal sanctions for anyone 21 or older
possessing 1 ounce (28.5 grams) or less of pot. It also legalizes possession
of up to 16 ounces (0.45 kg) of solid marijuana-infused goods - like brownies
- and up to 72 ounces (2.4 kg) of weed in liquid form.
Prosecutors in several counties announced last month they were dismissing
scores of misdemeanor marijuana possession cases following voter passage of
Washington's landmark statute, known as Initiative 502.
But lighting up a joint in public places, where the consumption of alcohol
already is banned, will remain illegal.
"If you're smoking in plain public view, you're subject to a ticket," Seattle

National Geographic has just launched this new version of its Field Guide to
Birds of North America which in printed form is one of THE references for
dedicated birders. The app lets you cary around a tremendous amount of
information in your pocket about the habits of birds, maps to their habitats,
and even recording of their calls.
The app is not web based, so it's a big one. Really big. 839 MB of big, so be
sure before you buy and download that you have the room. Of course, this means
its's available when you are out in the wild, and nowhere near a cell tower.
The app features videos of selected birds, and connects to the internet only
for the latest birding news. There are a series of filters to help you
identify what you are seeing in the field, like habitat, time of year, month,
color and more. The app has now added a personal journal, quizzes and a
birding tool kit with tips and tricks for beginners or advanced amateurs.
