15 Stars: Eisenhower, MacArthur, Marshall: Three Generals Who Saved the American Century By Stanley Weintraub $19.99 In the closing days of World War II, America looked up to three five-star generals as its greatest heroes. George C. Marshall, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and Douglas MacArthur personified victory, from the Pentagon to Normandy to the Far East. Counterparts and on occasion competitors, they had leapfrogged each other, sometimes stonewalled each other, even supported and protected each other throughout their celebrated careers. In the public mind they stood for glamour, integrity, and competence. But for dramatic twists of circumstance, all three — rather than only one — might have occupied the White House.
The story of their interconnected lives opens a fascinating window onto some of the twentieth century’s most crucial events, revealing the personalities behind the public images and showing how much of a difference three men can make. Marshall and MacArthur were contemporaries and competitors. Eisenhower was MacArthur’s underling, then Marshall’s deputy, before becoming MacArthur’s counterpart as a supreme commander, Ike in Western Europe, MacArthur in the Pacific. Each of the three five-star generals would go on to extraordinary postwar careers: MacArthur as a virtual viceroy of Japan, overseeing its transition to a new constitutional democracy, and then leading the UN forces in the Korean War; Marshall as secretary of state, author of the Marshall Plan, and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize; Eisenhower as president.
Fifteen Stars presents the intertwined lives of these three great men against the sweeping background of six unforgettable decades, from two world wars to the Cold War. It is history at its most dramatic yet most personal — a triumph for Stanley Weintraub, our preeminent military historian. |

1812 $107.1 1812 is splendidly researched and finely written–a fiery tale of our country’s youth, of mighty passions, a half-for-gotten war, and incomparable men and women. David Nevin’s readers are blessed -Ralph Peters, author of Red Army A rich, robust historical novel of the kind we don’t get often enough. Famous men and women spring vividly to life–action abounds– 1812 is a great read – John Jakes The war of 1812 would either make America a global power sweeping all the way to the Pacific–or break it into small pieces bound to mighty England. It was a second revolution of sorts to prove to the British that America had to be taken seriously. The principal actors in this drama were James and Dolley Madison, and Andrew and Rachel Jackson. Their courage and determination would shape America’s destiny. It was a perilous and pivotal time for the young and not-entirely-United States, but it has been the most unremembered time in American history. Until now. The faded old etchings of battle on land and sea, of statesmen, heroes, villains (and their ladyloves), are now, in David Nevin’s 1812, brought to vivid life and color, tumultuous intensity, and you-are there immediacy. -Gary Jennings, New York Times bestselling author of Aztec Whatever we have gained by technology we have lost by ease. These people who lived in 1812 faced danger, adventure, and–no income tax! Read on. -Rita Mae Brown, author of Dolley |

1898: Prelude to a Century $50.08 1898 was the year in which the United States first became a world power. In a decisive victory in a war with Spain lasting less than four months, it acquired territories in the Caribbean and Pacific, and positioned itself so that the Twentieth Century became to many The American Century . This was not the only way that 1898 set the course for the next hundred years. The year also saw the first flowering of the special relationship between the United States and Great Britain that so significantly influenced the next century. By contrast, the mecurial Kaiser William II’s decision to expand the German navy together with Germany’s rejection of an English effort to foster better relations set the two countries on a collision course that eventually led to war. Meanwhile the resolution of a dramatic confrontation between England and France in the southern Sudan led the two countries to end their long-standing colonial rivalry and later join as allies in two World Wars. Finally, the turmoil created by France’s Dreyfus Affair evidenced the strong anti-Semitism in supposedly enlightened Western Europe that foreshadowed the Holocaust. It tells the story of the larger-than-life Theodore Roosevelt as he put the American navy on a war footing, led his Rough Riders up San Juan Hill, and waged a tumultuous whistle stop campaign to win election as New York’s Governor. Other memorable characters include the cautious President William McKinley, whom events transformed into a committed imperialist, the ambitious twenty-three-year-old Winston Churchill, who emerged for the first time as a public figure, novelist Emile Zola, who exiled himself from France to escape imprisonment for his accusations inthe Dreyfus case, and the intrepid Captain Jean-Baptiste Marchand, who led a small French contingent through more than three thousand miles of African wilderness only to be ordered home from his post on the Upper Nile. |

A Sailor’s Log: Water-Tender Frederick T. Wilson, USN, on Asiatic Station, 1899-1901 $148.73 Frederick T. Wilson was an engineer who carried the rank of first-class petty officer and served on one of the Navy’s first modern battleships, the uss Oregon, at the turn of the twentieth century. The need for a U.S. naval fleet in the Pacific and East Asia was created by the acquisition of Guam and the Philippines from Spain and the annexation of Hawaii as a territory. The deployment of a significant naval force to the Asiatic Station following the victory at Manila Bay in 1898 brought Wilson there aboard the uss New Orleans. Wilson participated in the relief of the legations in Peking during the Boxer Rebellion of 1900. On his way to the Pacific theater, fate intervened when his ship ran aground on an uncharted reef in the Gulf of Pechili and was sent to Japan for repairs. A Sailor’s Log is Petty Officer Wilson’s record of this cruise; his assignment on the Aisatic Station, including stops at Nagasaki, Kure, Japan, Woosung, China, Shanghai, and Hong Kong; and his return to the United States in September 1901. Wilson offers a rare uncensored picture of enlisted life, with descriptions of bar girls and waterfront establishments that catered to the needs of American bluejackets, as well as observations on world events during imperialism. Wilson also discusses one of the great yet largely ignored issues of the turn-of-the-century U.S. Navy–the failure of naval officers to provide the quality leadership necessary to ensure the operation of efficient, effective warships. A Sailor’s Log is a detailed and insightful account of life in the Asiatic Fleet that enriches our understanding of U.S. Navy life a century ago. |

A Triad of Another Kind: The United States, China, and Japan $188.19 In the early 1990s, the U.S.-Chinese-Soviet strategic triangle vanished into history and, simultaneously, the U.S., China, and Japan formed their own power triad in the Asia-Pacific region. Is this another hostile strategic triangle? How do the three great powers interact with one another? Ming Zhang and Ronald Montaperto tackle these questions and present their thoughtful answers in A Triad of Another Kind. Investigating elite perception, domestic constraint, and international distribution of power, the authors find the triangular relationship full of uncertainty but not necessarily of hostility. They reveal the distinguishing characteristics of this triad, including its tendency to function as a reciprocal entity, rather than forming two-against-one relationships. A Triad of Another Kind is the first full-length work that critically examines the U.S.-China-Japan triangle, posing relevant questions and providing up-to-date analyses of this relatively new international pattern. |

Ace of Aces: The Life of Capt. Eddie Rickenbacker $8.75 ACE OF ACESThe Life of Captain Eddie Rickenbacker H. Paul JeffersAuthor of In the Roughrider’s ShadowIn this important new biography, acclaimed historian H. Paul Jeffers brings to vivid life one of the most daring and dramatic figures of twentieth century America-Medal of Honor recipient Capt. Eddie Rickenbacker. Born to immigrant parents with humble means at the turn of the century, Edward Rickenbacker was destined to embody the ingenuity, innovation, and courage that would make the United States a world power. Rickenbacker burst onto the national scene as one of the nation’s first star race car drivers. In an era when tracks were rough and safety precautions virtually unknown, Rickenbacker pushed the fastest machines at terrifying speeds. Later in life, he would own the Indianapolis Speedway and help establish the sport of modern race car driving as we know it. But Rickenbacker’s lasting fame came as an Ace of Aces in World War I, a fearless fighter pilot who would chase the Flying Circus of the legendary Red Baron above the battlefields of France. With his Hat-in-the-Ring squadron, Eddie was among the first to understand that the new technology of aviation would forever change the face of warfare. Shooting down twenty-six enemy planes in just seven months, he captured the hearts of a nation back home involved in its first Great War. Even after the war, he remained a national figure as one of the founders of Eastern Airlines. Turning his wartime experience to peacetime industry, Rickenbacker again led American interests in reshaping the world. And in one of the most dramatic chapters of World War II, a plane on which Rickenbacker flew as a civiliancrash-landed in the Pacific Ocean. He survived as a castaway for twenty-four days before a rescue that defied the odds. Ace of Aces is the unparalleled story of a hero and the dramatic events that shaped our country and our history. From the Hardcover edition. |

Ackerberg House and Addition: Richard Meier and Partners $8.44 Richard Meier is one of the most important architects of the postwar generation. He opened his New York office in 1963 and, in 1984, became the youngest recipient ever of the Pritzker Prize for Architecture. Meier has built a series of masterful modern houses and a great number of educational, commercial, and cultural facilities, including the Getty Center in Los Angeles, one of the most important commissions of the late twentieth century. The Ackerberg House, begun at the same time as the Getty Center, explores various responses to California’s unique climate and character. Situated between the mountains and the ocean, the house has remarkable views of both. Courtyards refer to the Spanish-colonial court typology of Southern California. While a ceramic-tile-clad facade separates the house from the Pacific Coast Highway, the ocean front is a more dimensional assemblage of posts and sunscreens that blurs the distinction between interior and exterior and invites casual passage to the out-of-doors. In 1992, six years after the house was completed, the Ackerbergs asked the architect to return. Despite his initial misgivings, Meier added a third story to the guest quarters, keeping the scale and proportions of the original composition but adding a new spatial progression and sense of expansion. He discovered, he writes, that he was able to change a house for the better and to infuse it with new life . |

Alpine $21.99 Alpine was born a railroad town, but long before the whistle of the steam locomotive broke the silence of Alpine Valley, the nearby spring was a favored campground for prehistoric nomads and later for Spanish explorers and freighters along the Chihuahua Trail. When the Southern Pacific unfurled its line down from Paisano Pass in 1882, landowner Thomas Murphy saw opportunity and platted the town. In 1887, Alpine was chosen as the county seat, and with the opening of Sul Ross Normal College in 1920, the town became the academic hub of the region. Following a decade of prosperity, the Great Depression and recurrent droughts triggered a slow decline. But since the early 1990s, Alpine has enjoyed a surge in regional art and culture, allowing it to reclaim its former glory as a proud little cosmopolitan cowtown perched at the top of the Texas Big Bend. |
