Age of Steam: California Gold Rush / Underground Railroad

Age of Steam: California Gold Rush / Underground Railroad

$19.99

Designer Ted Alspach has announced details of the first of three Steam/Age of Steam expansions he'll release in October 2010. California Gold Rush / Underground Railroad is a full-sized double-sided mounted game board with rules for playing in both the Steam and Age of Steam game system. Says Alspach At first glance both have similar rules changes: an option to forsake delivery of goods cubes or an increase of locomotive and replace it with a special function that will be key to winning the game. But the differences between the maps and how they are played are substantial. As might be expected California Gold Rush (for 3-6 players) is set in mid-1800s California with players trying to build tracks to gold mines in order to pick up gold before opponents can. During the delivery phase of each round instead of delivering goods or increasing your locomotive you can choose to claim gold on your tracks with each gold cube increasing your income/VP total by five. Underground Railroad (for 3-5 players) is set during roughly the same time period but on the other side of the U.S. In the years prior to the U.S. Civil War players set up railroad lines to help move slaves north to a free city. Whoever frees the most slaves wins the game ? but each delivery you make requires you to forgo delivering a goods cube for income or increasing your locomotive. Can you avoid bankruptcy while doing good? California Gold Rush / Underground Railroad is part of Bzier Games' Essen 2010 Map Pack detailed in this earlier game announcement and available for preorder directly from Bzier. Alpine

Alpine

$21.99

Alpine was born a railroad town, but long before the whistle of the steam locomotive broke the silence of Alpine Valley, the nearby spring was a favored campground for prehistoric nomads and later for Spanish explorers and freighters along the Chihuahua Trail. When the Southern Pacific unfurled its line down from Paisano Pass in 1882, landowner Thomas Murphy saw opportunity and platted the town. In 1887, Alpine was chosen as the county seat, and with the opening of Sul Ross Normal College in 1920, the town became the academic hub of the region. Following a decade of prosperity, the Great Depression and recurrent droughts triggered a slow decline. But since the early 1990s, Alpine has enjoyed a surge in regional art and culture, allowing it to reclaim its former glory as a proud little cosmopolitan cowtown perched at the top of the Texas Big Bend.

 Arthur Honegger

Arthur Honegger

$18.35

Arthur Honegger (1892-1955), Swiss by nationality, French by education and residence, is a major composer of the twentieth century. Along with Poulenc and Milhaud he was a member of Le Groupe des Six and attained a certain notoriety with his composition Pacific 2.3.1, a musical representation of a steam locomotive. Although he earned popular acclaim early in his career, in his later years his consistently tonal musical language was considered outmoded. His most significant works include five symphonies; a large body of chamber music; and several large-scale oratorios that combine choral and instrumental writing with declaimed narrative in a uniquely effective way. He was also among the first composers to write scores for films, including Abel Gance’s masterpiece Napoleon.

Chesapeake & Ohio Super Power Steam Locomotives

Chesapeake & Ohio Super Power Steam Locomotives

$51.54

This book fuels the world-wide interest in American locomotives of the late-steam era, when strong performance, high horsepower, and functional beauty were givens. Among roads wealthy enough to afford such engines, Chesapeake & Ohio was in the forefront with its ‘Super Power, ‘ and this new book systematically sets forth the development, use, maintenance, and performance of these ‘custom made’ designs from the introduction in 1930 of the aeO T-1, then the world’s most powerful two-cylinder locomotive, through the ‘Kanawhas’ and ‘Greenbriers’ of the 1940s, to the L-2 class of 1942 and 1948, the worlds heaviest Hudsons, to the last fifteen of the Allegheny type, which had established the highest drawbar horsepower record of any steam locomotive in the world. The fascinating story of aeO Super Power involves not only the road’s own Mechanical Department in Richmond, Virginia, but its close association with Lima Locomotive Works, of Lima, Ohio, and its even closer kinship with the authoritative Advisory Mechanical Committee of Cleveland, Ohio. In giving the reader a fresh and penetrating examination of aeO Super Power, this book brings together over 175 photos, plus reproductions of aeO’s own locomotive diagrams and an ICC inspection report for Allegheny no. 1604, preserved today in Baltimore. The photos were carefully selected for quality, relevance to the text, and originality. These action and still photos hopefully will offer images seldom if ever seen before that the viewer will greet with surprise and delight.
